Transoral Fundoplication Has Expanded Presence at 2011 SAGES Annual Meeting

Three New Clinical Data Series Presented Demonstrating Positive Outcomes

Redwood City, CA (April 20, 2011) – EndoGastric Solutions (EGS), the leader in the emerging field of Natural Orifice Surgery (NOS), today announced that the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) procedure received a significant expanded presence at the 2011 SAGES Annual Meeting Scientific Session and Postgraduate Course in San Antonio, Texas.

In total, three new data series were presented during the scientific session, adding outcomes measures on 70 new patients to the existing scientific literature. In addition, two poster presentations were available at the meeting. Details of the oral presentations include:

  • David Dargis, D.O., of Allegan Michigan, presented a retrospective series of quality of life and medication cessation outcomes.  Results at a median six-month follow-up included 13/17 (76%) of patients off daily PPI therapy, and median GERD-HRQL scores decreased from 27 pre-operatively to 5 post-operatively.
  • Karim Trad, M.D., of Reston, Virginia, presented a retrospective series of 28 patients at median 14-month follow up. Patients treated by Dr. Trad experienced similar GERD-HRQL improvement to those reported in Dr. Dargis’ series, and also reported significant improvement in atypical symptoms. Median Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) scores improved from 17 pre-operatively to 4 postoperatively, with scores normalizing in 64% of patients
  • Brant Oelschlager, M.D., of Seattle, Washington, presented quality of life and pH-metry findings from his initial series of 22 patients with 6-month follow up. Median pH measures in those who underwent post-operative testing decreased from 11.6% of study time to 3.8% post-operatively.

Additional exposure included three presentations demonstrating the feasibility of performing a laparoscopic fundoplication in patients who did not receive symptomatic relief following TIF. The largest series in this discussion was presented by surgeons from The Ohio State University.  The abstract from this presentation stated:

“In this series, previous TIF did not result in prolonged operative times, significant operative hemorrhage, or iatrogenic hallow viscus injury. These data suggest that laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication can be safely performed in this patient population without increased operative morbidity.”

“We believe that SAGES 2011 will be viewed as a milestone in the development of TIF as the standard of care for appropriate GERD patients,” said Thierry Thaure, President and Chief Executive Officer of EndoGastric Solutions. “The rate at which new data is reaching the market has never been higher. The data now being presented demonstrates that TIF will play a significant role in the treatment armamentarium for GERD specialists.”
