by Chip Hennen Redwood City, CA (September 30, 2010) – EndoGastric Solutions (EGS), the recognized leader in the emerging field of Natural Orifice Surgery (NOS), today announced that 5,000 NOS procedures have been completed worldwide using the company’s innovative EsophyX and StomaphyX technologies. Procedure momentum has been accelerating, with nearly half the procedures performed within the last 12 months. EsophyX and StomaphyX, EGS’ first two NOS surgical devices, are designed specially for performing incisionless reconstructive gastrointestinal procedures. The devices are introduced into the body through the mouth, rather than through an abdominal incision. The TIF procedure, performed with the EsophyX device, creates an esophagogastric fundoplication to form a robust antireflux barrier. The StomaphyX device enables surgeons to create an unlimited number of large, full-thickness tissue folds, or plications, in the GI tract. “Natural Orifice Surgery has delivered incredible benefits for thousands of patients,” said Thierry Thaure, EndoGastric Solutions' President and Chief Executive Officer. “Reaching this milestone is a clear demonstration of the strong demand for incisionless surgical solutions. EndoGastric Solutions and the hundreds of surgeons that perform our procedures have launched a movement that is rapidly changing the way surgery is performed for conditions of the upper GI tract.” “Five years ago Professor Guy-Bernard Cadiere and I performed the very first EsophyX procedures,” commented Dr. Amin Rajan, an internationally respected gastroenterologist (Brussels, Belgium). “We pioneered this procedure because we believed we would be able to bring the benefits of a reflux fundoplication to patients without the side effects of long-term medical treatment and without the complications associated with laparoscopic surgery. What we found is that when performed on the right patients, the EsophyX procedure is as we envisioned it. Ten of our first 17 patients remain in our practice and receive annual exams including endoscopy. With that information, I can say that for those patients who were appropriately selected, received a robust antireflux valve, and were asymptomatic at one year, they continue to have a durable, robust valve and remain asymptomatic at 5 years.”
